Major chiller installation projects

LH-plc sister company Klima-Therm has successfully delivered a host of major chiller installation projects including for iconic buildings such as landmark concert venue the Royal Albert Hall.

In the heart of Kensington, London overlooking Hyde Park, the project within the Grade I listed building presented several challenges, due in part to the logistics of access, and the key requirement to preserve the structural integrity and fabric of the building.

The project involved installing two high performance, high efficiency Geoclima Turbomiser chillers as part of a major upgrade and retrofit. The chillers had to be positioned within a plant room located below floor level, at Basement Level B2, which required careful planning and execution by the project team.

The first stage required the pavement level access area to be cordoned off to ensure the safety of members of the public and building staff. Steel gratings securing the basement shaft were then removed and a temporary handrail installed.

Chain blocks and slings were used to lift the chillers in turn and lower them down through the vertical open shaft. Once basement B4 level was reached, the machines were carefully manoeuvred inside the plant room through a side door. Two gantries were then used to lift them in turn to the next floor down.

From this position, the chillers were moved onto timbers to the next lifting point. A lifting beam installed on the ceiling of the plant room at level B2 by the customer was used in conjunction with runways and chain blocks to lift the chillers from plant room B4 to plant room B2, and into their final position.
